Sisterhood Everlasting Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Book 6 Ann Brashares 9780385521222 Books

I first fell in love with the Sisterhood when I was in 6th grade. Throughout the first four books I stuck with every character, seeing a little bit of myself in all of them. Now that I have finally got around to reading Sisterhood Everlasting, I’m nearly the same age the Septembers.

With that being said, I believe that some of the previous reviews are written by readers who are not yet at an age where they are able to fully relate to or understand the characters as they are ten years into the future. I had always assumed that my life would be figured out by the time I was in my mid-late twenties. I never pictured myself being the age I am now and still feeling like I may as well have just graduated from high school. What I loved about this book is the reflection of the self-loathing, self-doubting, and self-discovery that we all go through as we make our way through our twenties. The loss of one sister forces the others to figure out who they truly want to be and what they want out of life and I felt so many emotions on that journey with them.

While the story did have its darker moments, there are so many moments of hope and transformation that are honestly beautiful. If you’ve never read the previous books in the series, I don’t think that this novel alone will be able to touch your soul the way it does if you’ve gotten to know the Sisterhood beforehand. This was such a meaningful end to an incredible series; I wish more than anything that I could read it again for the first time.

Sisterhood Everlasting Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Book 6 Ann Brashares 9780385521222 Books Reviews

Reading the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series in my late teens and early twenties, I could directly relate with the trials and tribulations of Lena, Carmen, Bee, and Tibby. It reminded me of my close group of girlfriends and though we didn't have nearly the same types of adventures, we did share a special bond together much like the girls. When I finished a Sisterhood book, I felt this overwhelming sense of hope- that despite any obstacles I may face, my friends and I could get through it together and be stronger in the end. That is not necessarily what I felt when I finished this book. If you're looking for a carefree, light, and exciting adventure of the four girls- this is not it. To be honest, this book is a bit emotionally draining.

Set ten years in the future, each girl is somewhat an exaggerated hyperbole of her old self- Lena is far too uptight and anxious; Bee is far too carefree and unanchored; Carmen is far too shallow; and Tibby...is far too mysterious (and absent). While it's only natural that these characters would evolve from 15 year old girls into 29 year old women, it seems that the author chose to only concentrate on each of the girl's most stereotypical, and frankly, negative attributes. This is distracting and, at times, entirely frustrating. Be prepared to be shocked and saddened throughout the book. While the author provides several mysterious plot twists, it does not make up for the lack of interaction between the characters. As you read the book you begin to understand why the friendship is strained, but you can't help but feel like this should not be the case from a group of four girls who have literally been friends since birth.

I am somewhat disappointed with the book, particularly its somber tone, but it does answer some of the questions I had about "where are the girls now?" I would recommend the book to any Sisterhood lover but with the qualification that this is not just "another" Sisterhood book. This isn't a young adult friendship/romance/adventure story, it's one about real life, adulthood, and the challenges that come with both of those. I would not recommend it to young girls (under 16) as some of the themes and events might be emotionally disturbing and too mature.
I could not put this book down. There must be more Bailey all grown up, Brian marries. I don't know I don't care just continue this wonderful fulfilling series. If you don't read this novel you will spend the rest of your life (if you were a fan of the traveling pants) wondering what happened to all of these wonderful characters. I'm 64 and when I saw it on Book Bub I knew I had to read it!!!
I read the first book in the series when it was published, on the recommendation of my editor. It was sweet, but until recently, I hadn't read any of the other books in the series. After rereading the first one again, I bought the series and read it. The final book is special. Tibby, who has been out of touch with the Septembers, sends them tickets to Greece for a post-birthday reunion. She has much to tell her friends, but when they arrive, she is missing. She is found dead the following day. At first, it appears that her drowning was an accident, but after reading a letter she had left for them, the friends misinterpret the meaning and believe she has killed herself. The friends spiral into guilt and despair, each in her own way - Carmen, keeping busy, Lena, in full retreat, and Bee, manically leaving Eric to cross California, and ultimately the ocean, to find Brian, answers, and an unexpected surprise Tibby left behind. Brashares takes the reader along with Carmen, Lena, and Bee on their journeys of grief, which they take separately. The magical realism just below the surface of all of these books is here, not in the form of a magical pair of pants, but in the form of the deceased Tibby. Tibby meddles with her friends' lives from beyond the grave, giving Carmen a fractious cell phone, sending Lena into the arms of Kostos, and helping Bee to recover from her angsty wanderlust. The most amazing thing about this story is the shift that happens to the three remaining friends when they discover that Tibby did not commit suicide, but drowned accidentally as a result of a degenerative disease she hadn't told them she had. While there were times the book became soap operaish, the feelings of the friends, and how they expressed them, were beautifully crafted. I was overwhelmed by grief when I thought that Tibby had killed herself, and actually sobbed with relief when I realized she hadn't. I'm a sucker for a happy ending, and this one was extremely happy, if a tad too perfect...
