It was interesting how the little who they called baby grew up without her mother with her moving in with her aunt after her mother died but leaving behind most her things at home with her dad , her aunt work a lot so basically she was raised by her 2 teenage cousin and their best friend - if I remember right she was 6 at the time she moved in and the cousins around 15 16. The friend of her cousins and her neighbour before her mom past , her mom always described him as a hippy and told her not to look at him because they thought then hippies were not the kind of guys girls should be friends or anything else with but she talks about how she would watch him from her bedroom window mowing the grass cuz she had a crush on him. Once she grows up they fall in love , 10 year age difference which isn't a big deal these days as long as both are of legal age but frowned upon in the sixties but her Dad came to accept it and realized Ed wasn't really a hippy but even if be was he just wants his daughter to be happy.

I absolutely adored this book. I fell in love with Baby and her surrogate family. It was told with such warmth and honesty - a little girl blossoming into womanhood without the love and guidance of her mother but with the love of 3 unlikely surrogate mums.
An excellent read. I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end. Shirley Johnson has a gift. I'm off to buy her next book.
Spoiler alert
I loved the first half of this book. I cried when her mom died and smiled at how well those 16 -year old boys took care of her. I can see my nephews taking care of my kids like that. Baby was so well loved and taken care of. I wasn't a fan of all the vulgar language and the smoking of the boys but that was another time and something I'm not used to nor do I approve of. What got me was her relationship with Ed at the age of 16. Couldn't he have kept it in his pants a little longer? Waited for her a little longer? Baby seemed very naive for 16 since she was shocked when her long time boyfriend put his hand up her shirt but was ready to commit to a sexual relationship, being a mother, and to marriage to Ed just a few days later. A little too unrealistic for my taste.
The beginning was great but the last half could use some serious help. It almost sounded like the author had first-hand experience with all this. Just creepy that a 26 year old could get off so easily on a 16 year old girl he helped raise.
I really fell in love with Ed and all of the characters in this story! I can't say I personally relate to the time described in the book because I wasn't born yet but the author did a fantastic job in making you feel like you were a fly on the wall! I don't normally read stories like this (I'm more of a paranormal/horror fan) but this was definately a gem I was happy to discover! The book covers a big chunk of time and there are lots of ups and downs but it never feels too long or drug out or anything and the ending is just sweet and perfect! Highly recommended!!
I don't know if I like it or not...the disturbing part of it to me was how much older Ed was than Baby and to allow that relationship to go as far as it did with that age difference...clearly she was infatuated and he was with her..I don't know...like I stated..not sure if I like it or not.
I did like how Ed laughed and how that was used often' huh uhuh huh..' that was used often
and I found it really amusing with his character. The characters and the time frame and what all
was going on for each was believable. It was sad how it turned out for the VietNam vet cousin.
At the end I was glad I read it.
Once I started reading, I just wanted to find out the ending. It becomes very obvious that Ed and Baby are going to end up together. The plot is predictable but engaging. The love affair between the two main characters makes me uneasy. Ed doesn't get in any kind of trouble at all for what he and Baby do. In real life, he could get serious jail time for statutory rape, since she is a minor. The ending felt incomplete because we never find out what happened to Allen. He snaps, hurts Kai and Baby, and says something cryptic and that's it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed reading this but it needs more details.
This was a great story, very well written and intriguing, but definitely an 18 and up story depicting oral sex and intercourse. *spoilers* If Ed had been younger, closer to her age - perhaps just a couple years, I probably would have loved it. But he was way too much older and his actions were selfish and criminal. The supposed happy ending (really, pregnant that young is a happy ending?)didn't really change for me that fact that he took advantage of a very young girl. It is hard to leave only 3 stars because it was very well written - and perhaps that should be my only criteria, but I was left feeling uncomfortable and had to imagine him as younger in order to make it work for me.
I loved this book and I'm giving it five stars even though it wasn't perfect.
Ms Johnson captures the flavor of the 60's perfectly. It was a time when a young child could be casually given to a relative with no paperwork or advance planning. When that relative could feel free to go off to work every day, leaving a little girl in the hands of two teenage boys. It was a time when those boys could accept the responsibility and actually take care of a little girl cousin.
I freely admit I am a sucker for novels told from a young child's point of view. I heart Ed Small reads like a memoir, and rings absolutely true to one who remembers those years very well.
At times it made me laugh out loud. Other scenes were heart wrenching and hard to read. But I didn't put it down.
I read it in one setting and will be looking for more from Shirley Johnson.
