When this book was on sale on Amazon, I didn’t even hesitate to purchase it. Now, I’m slightly disappointed I let myself so easily be fooled.

For one thing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this book. The writing is good, the characters are well-developed and the zombies are horrific enough for my taste. So what exactly didn’t I like about this book? Well, it’s hard to say because I can’t put my finger on it. I just couldn’t get into it. The story never got to that point where it hooked me or where I could – at the very least – connect with any of the characters. It took me a good three weeks to actually finish this book because most of the time I was bored by the slow pace and Michael’s introspection. I guess that’s what I didn’t like about this book.

And what’s with all the “yes-yes”? I grew tired of that long before I was halfway through.

Beyond that, I just don’t know what else to say about The End Games. I think I’ve read too many zombie and post-apocalyptic stories and I guess I’m just tired of the same plot formulas these novels are so diligently sticking to. Maybe if I’d read this same book three years ago, I might’ve enjoyed it a lot more. Overall, this just wasn’t for me.

Since the start of this zombie craze, I haven't found a piece of literature or film that could suck me into it, until recently. The Walking Dead is somewhat interesting, but not enough so that it consumes my attention. The End Games definitely is, however.

I am only about ten chapters into the book, but I'm already obsessed with it. The End Games is about more than just surviving a zombie apocalypse it's about an older brother trying to keep his younger brother from freaking out by telling his younger brother that it's all a game. The originality in that, compared to the plots of other zombie stories, is truly refreshing and is what makes this book a great read. I also love-for some reason-that T. Michael Martin named the zombies "Bellows".

Along with the story, the writing style of Martin is a large part of why I love The End Games. It's easy to tell the mood of a chapter based on it's sentences. For example, in times of panic the sentences become shorter. "Don't freak, please. Not now, Bub. Michael spotted the keys. They'd fallen onto the passenger seat. They were just out of reach-" This style of writing adjusts the reader's emotions to that of the characters.

As for the occasional references to products and video games, it bothered me at first, but they began to create a relatable feeling after a while. They also work to form their own type of metaphor.

The End Games deserves five stars, because of its originality and lack of fear to shock the reader in sometimes offensive ways (when the priest slits the throat of a woman). I can't wait every day to read more of it, and I can't wait to read more works from this already very talented author.

I really like Zombiefiction but a lot of it is so similar. What makes this book different is the writing style and the relationship between the brothers.

The book is written in a mix of third and first person point-of-views. It's narrated well mixed in with protagonist Michael's thoughts written in italics, creating a sort of free indirect discourse . This is a great technique for character development and provides some very well placed insights into Micheal's thoughts without sticking the reader in his head for the entire book.

The relationship between the brothers and Michael's unwavering concern for his brother is beautiful, reminding me at times of the father-son relationship in The Road (Oprah's Book Club). From the onset, the premise that Micheal's created for his brother that they are in a video game is genius and original. I am glad that the author keep this concept going throughout the book.

My main complaint is that there are way way way too many villains in this book, especially considering that the main characters are both children. As a result, the book felt very dark and I was so exhausted and on edge (not always in a good way) when reading it. Captain Jopek was, for me, absolutely terrifying, and I really applaud the author for his writing of this character - the most complex one in the book. The ending was rushed and unsatisfying considering the crazy ride that the author took me down.

Overall a great, suspenseful read. Recommend to anyone who enjoys zombie/sci-fi reading.
My only exposure to zombies was the cult classic "Night of the Living Dead" which bored me to death. Conversely, I couldn't put down "The End Games" because I was constantly dealing with a new plot twist until the last page of this debut novel. I liked the fast paced plot action, the descriptive writing which included a lot of imagery, the realistic characterizations, the human point of view, and the inclusion of timely societal issues such as an older brother's love and protection of his much younger brother, the mother's abusive boyfriend, the child with special emotional needs, and the post traumatic stress disorder soldier.

The one and only aspect of this book that I didn't like was the use of the word "effing." It didn't bother me because I know that word is true to the voice of some teens, and T. Michael Martin understands the teenage voice. Unfortunately, many school teachers would have a problem using this novel in their classrooms which is a terrible shame. Young adult authors have to realize that public school teachers have to keep to a standard that is without question.

This book is destined to be made into a movie! It's that good!
