If I could give it extra stars I would. I am an avid fan of historical fiction and of novels that are long enough to live in for a while. When I started reading EXIT UNICORNS, I found myself an excellent place to move into along with a fascinating cast of characters. The story takes place in tension and strife filled Belfast and Derry in Ulster Co., Northern Ireland. It is full of pain, glory, desperation, revolution, love ,deception and blood. Because I read it in my kindle and not in a traditional book, I had no idea whether or not I was approaching the end. I was constantly pleasantly surprised to find that there was a lot more left. It is no secret looking at this review that I enjoyed this novel. There are two more books in this series. I have loaded them into my kindle and am looking forward to reading them.

Exit Unicorns Cindy Brandner 9780759666610 Books Reviews

Loved lyrical prose, character development, complex story line. Thought it would have made amazing movie. Then, the ending completely ruined it. No loose ends tied up, characters left hanging; the main character left no clues to her motivation throughout the book. I hollered "arrgh" and almost threw my on the floor, startling my husband. Maybe the 2nd book will fix it but it shouldn't have to!!
I'm always looking for a good historical fiction series and Exit Unicorns absolutely delivers. I'm not sure why people compare it to Outlander. I'm a huge Outlander fan, but they have nothing in common. It's a different country, time period and concept. I found Exit Unicorns to be refreshingly unique, very well written and fast paced. I love each and every character and their journey. I can't wait for book 5!
Exit Unicorns is a beautifully told story of Northern Ireland during the 1960's, and the struggles its citizens endured in dealing with political, religious, and economic troubles that have wreaked havoc on their society for centuries. Northern Ireland's history is written in the blood of its people, who, although living side-by-side, were not equals.

The novel's main characters, Jamie Kirkpatrick, Pamela O'Flaherty, and the Riordan brothers, Casey and Pat, come from different backgrounds and walks of life, but through the drama that unfolds in and around Belfast, they are linked to one another in different but tangible ways. The backdrop of inequality, the detailed setting, and well-developed characters create a rich story where a violent quest for freedom comes alive. I found myself invested in each characters' struggles as they play their part in pushing back against social injustice, and as a result, end up suffering through their own personal fallout.

Cindy Brandner expertly weaves Northern Ireland's history into a book one can really sink one's teeth into. Her in-depth research into both the setting and the events that surround and shape her characters is very evident, and the dialogue and descriptions are a thing of beauty! If you enjoy an intelligent read that is entertaining, educational, and emotional, this book is a must read. It has everything romance, intrigue, and violence, and when you finish, you'll want to read more!
I have to admit I had a hard time getting into this book too. This was mostly because I was reading it on a tour bus and couldn't focus on it entirely. But I'm so glad I decided to start back at the beginning. I love the way the author not only tells what is happening, she completely immerses you in the story. The greatest criticism of this book it that there is so many pages with nothing really happening. But this is how the picture is painted in your mind. You see the character, you hear their voice, and you feel the warmth of the fireplace that character is sitting by. You feel that characters emotions, see what they are seeing. I can't say I love all the story she tells. It breaks my heart to hear of the hardships and cruelty these people had to endure. But I love the way she tells the story.
Cindy Brandner's books are Irish historical, political and romance novels all rolled into one. Starting with Exit Unicorns Ms. Brandner's does an amazing job of describing the historical information needed about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. I was so excited to hear that the novel was made into an audio book and I could hear it in a different light! Mr. Furlong did an awesome job with the narration and hearing the Irish brogue was just a delight. I highly recommend taking the time to read or listen to this series! I look forward to the rest of her novels in this series being made into audio books! Well done Ms. Brandner and Mr. Furlong! Slainte! 💚🍀
I have been anxious to write a review for Exit Unicorns for sometime, but have been afraid that it will fall woefully short of the merit it deserves. I don't feel it is necessary to summarize the book, as you can see from many other reviews what it is that Cindy Brandner invites us read. The story itself, of Pamela, Casey, Jamie, & Patrick, and their triumphs and struggles during the Irish Troubles is truly spellbinding. The intricacy in the way that each character is presented and how their lives ebb and flow with one another is thought-provoking. I found myself truly invested in their well-being. Admittedly, I flew through the book (and the entire series) in a whirlwind, as I was hungry to know the fate of these individuals I truly fell in in love with. I am now re-reading (with the audible version-which is fantastic as well) and absorbing Exit Unicorns with a renewed appreciation.

Cindy's attention to detail in her setting descriptions and background knowledge of historical Ireland is appreciated with the turn of each page. It has prompted me to do my own research into this time period, and have a better understanding and respect for a country I have so longed to visit but knew so little about.

I compare my passion for this series to my "first love" of Diana Galbadon's Outlander. I believed that another series could not come close to Outlander, but Cindy's work has changed that. {Please not, I am pitting the authors against one another, or the stories they tell- just that both series have moved and gripped me in a way that no other has.}

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have and will continue to.
